A brief history of Hypnobirthing |
|
The ideas behind Hypnobirthing have been around for some time, starting with the work of obstetrician Dr. Grantly Dick Read early in the 20th century. After a long career he published the book 'Childbirth Without Fear' which explained his findings that pain in childbirth is unnecessary and is a product of fear and tension. When we are fearful our bodies tense up, blood flow is restricted to certain parts of the body and muscles are therefore unable to do their jobs easily and painlessly. This theory was further looked at by many practitioners and in 1989 a US woman Marie Mongan came up with Hypnobirthing after using the techniques when birthing her children calmly and painlessly.
